Blog | The importance of saying thank you

As the phrase goes, manners cost nothing. If someone goes out of their way to help you on a personal level you would express your gratitude without hesitation. But when it comes to the working world, are we saying thank you enough?

Today is Thank Your Cleaner Day - an annual celebration, established by Kärcher to recognise cleaners. The day aims to shine a spotlight on the people who keep our workplaces and public buildings clean, safe and hygienic. And it’s got me thinking. 

I’ve worked in the cleaning and hygiene sector for over 25 years and I know how much hard work and skill is required to deliver the tasks at hand. But for a long time, the industry has been viewed in a negative way, with a reputation for being low skilled and badly paid. In my opinion, cleaners have been overlooked and under appreciated for far too long. 

What many people outside of our industry don’t see is the impact that our services can have on others and the dedication it takes for our cleaners to deliver them day-in-day-out, to the highest of standards. I firmly believe that cleaning operatives are an integral part of a company’s daily operation and without them, their service could grind to a halt. 

On this special day, I wanted to share some of the ways we try and show our cleaners our appreciation at Facilicom. Our company ethos is ‘happy people make happy people.’ First and foremost we want to make sure our staff are positive, healthy and valued, so we have many systems in place to support them. From our training and development programmes to our internal ‘Facilicom Awards’, we have established initiatives that not only equip our cleaners with the skills required to deliver their role, but also give a pat on the back to those that go above and beyond.

These are just some of the ways we show our colleagues our appreciation but on this special day, I’d like to a say a big ‘thank you’ to all our cleaning operatives on behalf of Facilicom – you are truly valued.

A simple thank you costs nothing but the value it holds for the cleaner, who often works day, night and weekends to keep your premises clean and hygienic, is invaluable.
